About the author
of the Scoot, Scoot Bandicoot® Children's Book Series
Karen Treanor has
been writing about animals since the age of six, when she first made the
acquaintance of a chipmunk in her back yard in New England. While working
in Southern Africa, she wrote several reading books based on local folk
tales for the Ministry of Education in Swaziland, and a number of radio
scripts for the English Language program of the Ministry of Education in
Lesotho.
Since settling in Western Australia and meeting the original Bounce and
Pounce bandicoots in her own backyard, Karen has been dedicated to improving
public awareness of these charming little native animals of Australia, which
often suffer for their superficial resemblance to rats. She thinks bandicoots
would have been a more appropriate State Animal for Western Australia than
numbats, "who got the job because of their flashy suits". She started Quenda
Books, which publishes the "Scoot, Scoot, Bandicoot®" series for children,
in 2003.
Karen’s crusade to make people more aware of bandicoots continues, as she
visits libraries and schools and gives talks to children about these endearing
little creatures, and also tells about the trials and tribulations of being
a small publisher.
She has given presentations at many Western Australian schools and libraries
and to adult organisations such as Rotary and local seniors' groups. Anyone
wanting Karen to give a talk to children or adults should email her at Quenda
Books.
Karen writes books
for older readers, including The Angelus Ghost, Death in the Sea of Grass, A
Tree in Mundaring, and the 'malice domestic' series featuring amateur
sleuth Geneva Bradford, Bitter Bones and Long Bones
. Several of the books are available in electronic formats from fidopublishing.com
Karen lives in Mundaring, near
Perth in Western Australia, and has many visiting bandicoots, possums, bobtail
lizards, parrots, magpies and currawongs as well as a very tolerant
husband. She is presently at work on the next volume of short stories about life
in the Perth hills, "Another
Tree in Mundaring".
